National Quilting Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Quilting

Quilting is the process of sewing or tying together at least two fabric layers. The practice of quilting dates back to 3400 B.C. It was primarily a method for providing physical protection and insulation.

A quilt is a form of bed cover that is traditionally made of three layers of fiber: a woven cloth top, a layer of batting or wadding, and a woven back, which are sewn together using the quilting technique. A quilt is distinguished from other types of blankets by its construction from multiple sections of fabric.

National Quilting Day honors quilters and their skills as quilters. The term ‘quilt’ is derived from the Latin word ‘culcita,’ which means stuffed sack. The French word ‘cuilte’ was adopted into the English language.

Quilting is practiced in nearly every region of the globe and is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of March. National Quilting Day was established by the National Quilting Association in 1991, and it has since become a global observance for all quilt enthusiasts and makers.

The background of National Quilting Day

Quilting is the process of sewing or tying together at least two fabric layers. The practice of quilting dates back to 3400 B.C. It was primarily a method for providing physical protection and insulation. However, decorative elements were frequently present, and today the majority of quilts are predominantly works of art.

In the United States during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, quilting was prevalent. In those days, only the wealthy had the leisure to practice quilting, so only a handful of people did so. For most people, commercial blankets or woven coverlets were more cost-effective than colonial quilts, such as the Baltimore album quilts, which displayed the exquisite needlework of the maker. With an estimated population of twenty-one million quilters, quilting is currently a popular pursuit.

The oldest example of a quilted piece is preserved at the Archaeology section of the Saint Petersburg branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is a linen textile discovered in a cave in Mongolia between 100 B.C. and 200 A.D.

Quilting Day can be traced back to the 1989 Quilters Day Out, which was organized by the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society to honor the ancient tradition and its practice in the state of Kentucky. Two years later, this event gained such popularity that the National Quilting Association declared a quilting holiday. From this date forward, Quilters Day Out became National Quilting Day. Over the years, this event has attracted participants from all over the world who have helped to create and preserve the global quilting heritage.

The earliest quilting artifacts were dated to 3400 B.C., indicating that this art form existed in prehistoric times. They were heavily trafficked until the Crusaders brought them back from the Middle East sometime in the 12th century. Since then, it had become an integral component of Colonial textile arts and one of their most recognizable characteristics.
