National Repeal Day 2023: Date, History and Why we love this day

Many former speakeasies have become bars in towns around the country, so you can book one and throw a 1920s-themed party for your pals without the cops coming, unless things go out of control.

National Repeal Day 2023: Happy National Repeal Day on December 5! In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a law ending the 13-year experiment with alcohol prohibition, which was increasingly unpopular. If you like booze, celebrate your legal right to drink. Contrary to common belief, prohibition slashed alcohol consumption in half in the 1920s, but it also eliminated alcohol tax revenues. Adding a risky, flapper-style edge to alcohol intake in illegal speakeasies may have created a cult around it, glamorizing it. We love glamour when drinking! Bring out your flapper-style outfits now…

Activities on National Repeal Day

Party at your local speakeasy

Many former speakeasies have become bars in towns around the country, so you can book one and throw a 1920s-themed party for your pals without the cops coming, unless things go out of control.

Try a new cocktail

Moscow Mules, Margaritas, Martinis, Manhattans, Daiquiris, Negronis, Old Fashioneds—seven cocktails should be enough to send even a strong horse home for the night. Why settle when there are so many intriguing combinations?

Remember mocktails!

It’s okay that not everyone drinks. More cocktail professionals are learning how to make mocktails, so whether you’re the designated driver or just cutting back, we recommend trying some of the non-alcoholic options. Especially if it’s late and you’re debating whether to have another drink!

Why we love National Repeal Day

Only this holiday is in our constitution.

The 1933 33rd Amendment made the 18th Amendment repeal the only national holiday in our constitution. You’re almost performing your patriotic duty by celebrating it, which is one of many reasons to be to work early tomorrow!

Flapper clothes rock.

Flapper women had unique haircuts and dressed in short skirts (gasp!). The flapper appearance and feminist messages motivate us. Men dressed better in 1920s with suspenders and pinstripe suits.

Can be good, alcohol

To be honest, we like all kinds of booze. We love publications that indicate drinking red wine reduces your chances of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, in addition to relaxing. You can drink three glasses of red wine for its health benefits. We enjoy cocktails too. And beer. Beer’s wonderful too.
