National Rubber Ducky Day 2024: “You’re the one, Rubber Ducky. You provide so much pleasure to bath time. Rubber ducky, you have my undying affection! Sung Ernie from Sesame Street while taking a bath. The nation honors the toy on January 13th, National Rubber Ducky Day, so it’s clear that not just the amiable puppet loves this bath item.
National Rubber Ducky Day History
Throughout its existence, the well-known toy has undergone numerous changes. Created in the 1800s, when rubber production started, the duck was later manufactured using vinyl and plastic throughout both World Wars because rubber was in short supply at the time. When Landon Smart Lawrence first filed for a patent on the ducky toy in 1928, it was a little heavier because he had added a weight to ensure that it would always remain upright.
You never know when you could run into a rubber ducky in the ocean. In 1992, amid a storm, 28,000 rubber ducks that were traveling to Washington via boat capsized. According to legend, the ducks floated north to the Arctic, became stuck in the ice, and then gradually thawed out into the Atlantic. There are still thousands of them out there, and they frequently come ashore on coastlines everywhere. Keep an eye out and don’t forget to commemorate their birthday on January 13!

Take in a rubber ducky race
The Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, holds a duck race through Big Walnut Creek once a year. A sponsor buys each duck so the hospital can fund research. One costs $5, while a “brood” of 130 costs $500. Witnesses observe as thousands of the yellow toys are thrown into the creek and race to see which one can cross the finish line first. The top three ducks, identified by their sponsor’s name, win significant rewards for the sponsors, such as a BMW on a one-year lease!
Have a bath!
Enjoy the ducky the way it was meant to be enjoyed! Light some candles, add some bubbles to your tub, and play some calming music. To make it even more enjoyable, throw a few rubber ducks into the bathtub as you take some time to unwind and rejuvenate.
