National Sea Serpent Day is observed on August 7 to commemorate one of the most frequent sea serpent sightings. Sea serpents, also known as sea dragons, were prevalent in ancient mythology, and Sea Serpent Day honours them. They may have been inspired in part by the colossal oarfish, which can grow up to 50 feet in length and lives thousands of feet below the ocean’s surface.

National Sea Serpent Day commemorates sea serpent sightings and the numerous other tales that have been recounted about them. In contrast to their supposed ancestor, the harmless oarfish, serpents are frequently portrayed as dangerous creatures.

During their voyage to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic in August 1848, the crew of the HMS Daedalus reported seeing a 60-foot-long, maned creature with its head and torso protruding from the water.

One can only fathom the awe and amazement they felt upon seeing such a creature. Over the years, additional accounts of equally extraordinary sightings have emerged. Unsurprisingly, each account presents different facts that frequently contradict other accounts. However, the stories continue to propagate.

Large aquatic animals such as whales, sharks, and sea lions have frequently been misidentified as sea serpents.
