National Sean Day 2024: Each year on February 1st, people celebrate National Sean Day. Sean is a male Irish given name that is transcribed in Irish English as “Seán” or “Séan.” Many are also written as “Shaun,” “Shawn,” or “Shon,” Seán is an anglicization of Irish forms of the Biblical Hebrew name “Yohanan.” Sean is a gender-neutral name for boys and females. Sean’s name signifies “God is Merciful” or “gracious” when translated.
Sean entered the Irish language and was most likely derived from “Jean,” a French variant of the Hebrew name “Yohanan.” As is common in Gaelic when adopting Biblical names that contain J in other languages, the letter J, derived from I, is absent from Gaelic (English did not have the letter J until the late 17th century, with John formerly spelled ‘Iohn’). Instead, the letter S is used. When William the Conqueror, a Norman duke, invaded England in 1066, the Norman French name “Jahan” or “Johan” was spelled “John” and pronounced “Jean.”
Under the rule of the Norman King of England, Normans from the Welsh Marches captured parts of Leinster and Munster in the 1170s. The Norman aristocracy replaced the Irish nobility in these regions. The Norman aristocracy, some of whom went by the Norman French name “Johan” or the anglicized name “John,” replaced the Irish nobles in these areas. Once the Irish adapted the name to fit their dialect and spelling, they altered it to “Seán.”
In Gaelic-speaking regions of Scotland, the name was formerly the common spelling of John, but “Iain” or “Ian” has since taken its place. In Irish, the name “Seán” is pronounced “Sheáin,” whereas typical Scots and Highland English forms are “Eathain,” “Eoin,” “Iain,” and “Ian.” These anglicizations are gaining popularity even in Gaelic-speaking regions, partly because of registrars in the U.K.
