On the first day of summer in 2016, Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau established National Seashell Day. This day was established as a marketing ploy to attract tourists to Southwest Florida's Fort Myers and Sanibel beaches to honour the seashells found there.
National Seashell Day is observed annually on June 21, the first day of summer. This day encourages you to visit your local beach to appreciate the beautiful shells left behind by creatures, primarily snails and mollusks. There are so many different types of shells that can be discovered on beaches; one simply needs to explore. However, ensure that you only collect empty shells and not those containing living organisms. If you discover such shells, you should release them back into the ocean.
On the first day of summer in 2016, Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau established National Seashell Day. This day was established as a marketing ploy to attract tourists to Southwest Florida’s Fort Myers and Sanibel beaches to honour the seashells found there. National Seashell Day was first observed on Captiva Island during a broadcast of “Good Morning, America.”
Did you know that Sanibel Island is known as the Seashell Capital of the World due to the profusion of seashells there? Each year, people flock to the islands of Captiva and Sanibel in quest of more than 400 species of shells. The islands’ location and tranquil waters make them the top choice for seashell hunters.
Despite the fact that shelling is permitted, it is unlawful to collect live shells, which include any shell that contains a living organism. It is inhumane to disturb their habitat, as the shell is their home. This day is also observed in an effort to combat the illegal shell traffic. In fact, shellers are also encouraged to limit their acquisition of empty shells.
National Seashell Day is the perfect occasion to express gratitude for the existence of the gorgeous shells that serve as habitats for various sea creatures.

The majority of shells, nine out of ten, are dextral and therefore open to the right.
There are two varieties of seashells, those that are plain and smooth (like clamshells) and those that have spikes, ridges, and protrusions.
The intricate colours and patterns on a seashell serve a purpose; for example, mollusks utilise patterns to determine where to place their mantles.
Utilising a variety of proteins and calcium carbonate, mollusks produce a single shell that serves as their home for their entire lives.
There are approximately 200,000 species of mollusks in the world, and each produces a shell that is unique.
