National Simp Day is annually observed on June 3. It is an important day that seeks to eliminate the stigma associated with the term’simp.’ For instance, many males are referred to as “simps” when they express sympathy for another individual. The term is derogatory because it implies that the male desires sexual relations with a specific woman. Women, on the other hand, are referred to as “simps” when their affection for a man goes unrequited. Different interpretations based on gender are misogynistic and result in negative attitudes. This is why it is essential to observe National Simp Day and halt the frequent judgements that surround us.

The background of National Simp Day

The word’simp’ has held distinct meanings in every century, as its definition has changed over time. The term was coined in 1985 by American rapper Too Short, who used it in his 1985 hit single ‘Pimpology.’ In the 1980s, it was used to designate a person who was ‘overly sympathetic.’ The term was also used to refer to individuals who are considered to be stupid: simpletons. Nonetheless, as a result of globalisation and the emergence of numerous social media platforms, the word’s meaning shifted. It now refers to a person who provides extra attention in exchange for sexual activity. On the other hand, Urban Dictionary defines a “simp” as “someone who does way too much for a person they like.” The word was added to the dictionary in 2005. This one-sided infatuation with a person is known as “simping” and can be directed at celebrities, legislators, social media influencers, etc.

In 2010, rappers continued to use the insulting term’simp’. The term attained its peak of popularity in 2019, when it began to appear frequently on TikTok. It was subsequently utilised frequently on Twitch and Twitter. Since the term now refers to a negative method of expressing love, it became necessary to educate the public on its original meaning.

JohnOfTheForest, a Twitch broadcaster, video gamer, and musician, originated the day. Additionally, he is known for his simpcore compositions, a subgenre of pop. Annually, he publishes a sim core song to emphasise the significance of the day.
