The background of National Sophie Day

The origin of the moniker Sophie is Greek. The name ‘Sophia’ means ‘knowledge’ and has a French equivalent. Beginning in the fourth century, its variants were first recorded in writing. Since then, numerous well-known figures and iconic characters have been named Sophie. Sophie Hatter, the protagonist of the best-selling book turned animated film “Howl’s Moving Castle,” and Sofie Fatale from Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” are examples.

Greece, Cyprus, Albania, the Balkans, Asia Minor, and the eastern portion of the Mediterranean are the native homelands of the Greek language. It is the Indo-European language with the longest documented history, with over 3,400 years of written documentation. During the third millennium BCE, it first appeared on the Balkan peninsula. A clay tablet discovered in Messenia between 1450 and 1350 B.C. is the oldest fragment of written Greek evidence. The language is divided into six periods, i.e., Proto-Greek, Mycenaean Greek, Ancient Greek, Koine Greek, Mediaeval Greek, and Modern Greek. Proto-Greek is a presumed but undocumented ancestor of all Greek dialects. Mycenaean Greek was the first documented variant of the Greek language, followed by Ancient Greek, the language of the Archaic and Classical eras of ancient Greece.

The language era remained in use until 1453, when Constantinople fell. The subsequent period of Koine Greek can be traced back to Alexander the Great’s conquest of territories. It ultimately became the second language of the Roman Empire and is also known as New Testament Greek or Biblical Greek. Mediaeval Greek was the continuation of Koine Greek, which consisted of spoken dialects of Koine that swiftly evolved into Modern Greek. Modern or Neo-Hellenic Greek emerged during the Byzantine period in the eleventh century.
