Sponsored by the American Library Association and the American Book Publishers, the United States observed its first National Library Week in 1958.
The first Thursday of National Library Week is designated as National Support Teen Literature Day. This year’s event occurs on April 27. Since 2007, the Day has been celebrated annually during National Library Week in the United States. Since then, the initiative has emphasised getting adolescents back into literature and away from trouble. If you do not develop a joy of reading by the age of 15, the likelihood that you will develop a passion and regular reading habit throughout your life is significantly diminished. National Support Teen Literature Day is not only about providing young adults with access to literature, but also about combating the stigma that reading is uncool and not worth the effort.
Sponsored by the American Library Association and the American Book Publishers, the United States observed its first National Library Week in 1958. The objective was to get people back into libraries and reading books. As a national civic asset, libraries provide the public with an essential utility. If libraries, librarians, and the books they keep lose popularity, an entire industry and a generation of book-averse individuals will suffer.
In ancient societies, literacy and the ability to read were restricted to a select few for centuries, if not thousands of years. If you could read, you had affluence and power; you were educated, but the industrial revolution and the invention of the printing press made it possible for everyone to read. Since the turn of the twentieth century, global literacy rates have consistently increased to a point where they are no longer a cause for concern.
In 1958, however, the widespread prevalence of radios, televisions, and musical instruments meant that books and literacy were not receiving the same level of attention as they had a decade earlier. To combat the rising concern that Americans were losing interest in books and libraries, a week was devoted to promoting awareness and appreciating our libraries as a public institution. In 2007, when smartphones and social media have begun to take off globally, the United States finds itself in the same predicament as it did in 1958. National Support Teen Literature Day was incorporated into the weekly commemoration in 2007 as part of an initiative to specifically target teenagers and reinforce positive reading habits.
