In 2006, she launched a blog called “Cong Ly va Su That,” which translates to “Justice and Truth,” where she detailed actual police violations. She lost her job shortly after and was kicked out of the Community Party of Vietnam due to harsh criticism. Charges of spreading anti-state propaganda led to her imprisonment in 2011.
In response to accusations made against her daughter, Dang Thi Kim Lieng, her mother, self-immolated in front of the Bac Lieu Province government buildings on July 30, 2011. Ta Phong Tan received a ten-year prison sentence. Numerous organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the U.S. State Department, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, disagreed with this judgment. After three years, she was freed and went to the United States.
