National Ta Day 2024: Every year on January 17, we celebrate National Ta Day, a time to honor all Ta people worldwide. Ta is a popular last name among the Chinese population in Vietnam. The Chinese surname that inspired this name is transliterated as “to thank, apologize, wither, and decline.” The majority of Tas who emigrated from China and settled abroad during the past 400 years most likely originated from the regions of Guangdong and Fujian.
Vietnamese surname Ta has Han Chinese ancestry. It is thought to be the Chinese surname Xie’s Vietnamese variant. People from South China changed their surnames to Vietnamese surnames upon migrating to Vietnam. They took on the surname “Ta,” which means “thank you” in Vietnamese, since their Chinese surname also meant “thank you.”
Ta Phong Tần is one of the many notable figures in history with the Ta surname. Ta, a Vietnamese dissident blogger and former police officer, was born on September 15, 1968, and is a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam. After starting her blog while working as a police officer, Ta Phong Tan went on to work as a freelance journalist in 2004. In 2006, she launched a blog called “Cong Ly va Su That,” which translates to “Justice and Truth,” where she detailed actual police violations. She lost her job shortly after and was kicked out of the Community Party of Vietnam due to harsh criticism. Charges of spreading anti-state propaganda led to her imprisonment in 2011.
In response to accusations made against her daughter, Dang Thi Kim Lieng, her mother, self-immolated in front of the Bac Lieu Province government buildings on July 30, 2011. Ta Phong Tan received a ten-year prison sentence. Numerous organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the U.S. State Department, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, disagreed with this judgment. After three years, she was freed and went to the United States.
