Teaching is the most difficult profession in the world. One day is insufficient to recognise their incredible work, but we can all agree that it is a decent beginning. When was the first National Teacher Appreciation Day
Teacher Appreciation Day occurs on the first Tuesday of the month of May. This year, it occurs on May 2. It is a day to recognise the benevolent, diligent, and patient individuals who leave an indelible mark on our lives. Teachers are entrusted with the care and future of students; therefore, every day should be teacher appreciation day. However, these extraordinary professionals do not always receive the recognition and compensation they merit. National Teacher Appreciation Day intends to alter this perception.
Teaching is the most difficult profession in the world. One day is insufficient to recognise their incredible work, but we can all agree that it is a decent beginning. When was the first National Teacher Appreciation Day and how did it originate? Eleanor Roosevelt is responsible for initiating the movement. Roosevelt persuaded Congress of the importance of establishing a day to honour teachers’ contributions.
Some states were already commemorating a day for teachers before Roosevelt approached Congress. Mattye Whyte, an Arkansas educator who wrote to numerous education system executives, is believed to have originated the concept for this special day. She ultimately began writing letters to Roosevelt with the hope that she would support the welfare of educators and their cause. National Teacher Appreciation Day did not become an official national holiday until 27 years after Roosevelt presented the cause to Congress.
In 1980, the National Education Association (N.E.A.) collaborated with the Indiana and Kansas State Boards of Education to lobby Congress for the establishment of a national day for teachers. The United States observed the first National Teacher Appreciation Day on March 7, 1980. In 1984, the celebration was shifted to May. The National Parent Teacher Association initiated this. Instead of one day, they determined that instructors require at least one week of recognition. Thus, the first American Teacher Appreciation Week began. In 1985, the N.E.A. established National Teacher Appreciation Day as the Tuesday of the first full week of May.
