National Truckers Appreciation Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The American landscape, particularly long-distance highways, would be desolate if it were not for trucks transporting products and other essential cargo between locations.

National Truckers Appreciation Day, observed on October 4, honors a deserving group of individuals and their commitment to tackling one of the most difficult and vital occupations in the country while keeping the economy moving. We tip our hats, or rather our trucker caps, to them and venerate a profession that includes some of the bravest and kindest individuals in the United States.

The background of National Truckers Appreciation Day

The American landscape, particularly long-distance highways, would be desolate if it were not for trucks transporting products and other essential cargo between locations. Transporting finished products and raw materials to and from manufacturing plants, retail stores, and distribution centers is an essential societal service. Additionally, truck drivers must inspect their vehicles for mechanical problems or safety concerns and be aware of the truck axle weight limits in each state.

Others, such as driver/sales employees, are responsible for sales, cleaning, preparing and entertaining guests, and providing customer service. When loading and unloading shipments, truck drivers collaborate closely with warehouse associates and employees.

In 2019, the trucking industry in the United States was valued at $791,7 billion, demonstrating the industry’s evident significance to the nation’s economy. The transportation industry employs approximately 7.4 million individuals, of which approximately 3.5 million are truck drivers. The transportation industry is expanding despite the current global recession. The number of available truck driving jobs increased by over 10,000 between April and June of 2020. In uncertain times, trucking provides a greater sense of stability than virtually every other industry in the country.

Bill Stearnes, a used truck salesman from Memphis, founded National Truckers Appreciation Day in 2020 to commemorate those who deliver your food, clothing, and everything else you use or consume. Despite making significant sacrifices to keep this country moving, truckers frequently go unnoticed and unappreciated. Sometimes even endangering their lives. Because so many of them are separated from their families for days, weeks, or even months, there is no greater day than October 4 to express the nation’s gratitude.

Activities on National Truckers Appreciation Day

Learn to operate a tractor.

The most prevalent vehicles on the road are the larger ones that travel hundreds of miles to deliver cargo to a variety of destinations. Why not gain this experience by learning to operate a truck? If you appreciate trucking so much, you might decide to become one. Driving such massive vehicles over such extensive distances can be relatively relaxing and entertaining.

Accompany a lorry driver during a journey.

Want to experience what it’s like to be a truck driver without becoming one? Asking a motorist to accompany them on a trip is an ideal way to sample the adventure without committing. Pack some refreshments for the journey, buy him or her some water, and keep them company while you pursue your dream experience. You could possibly find a new friend.

Invite a lorry driver to a meal.

The next time you see truckers resting at a gas station, invite them over for supper. They spend a considerable amount of time traveling, so a warming meal and some conversation can go a long way. Kindly express your appreciation to transporters, who frequently go unnoticed because they are constantly on the move. Typically, they do this for extended periods of time away from their families.
