National Unicorn Day is observed on April 9 to honour the most popular mythical creature of all time. Why? Because if we don’t take the time to honour a magnificent, horned, rainbow-colored mythical creature, we’re certainly missing a trick. The unicorn represents pleasure, fantasy, and awe. It is a symbol of color, childlike beauty, and enchantment. They frequently appear on birthday cakes and children’s apparel, and let’s be honest, many of us adults still enjoy them. National Unicorn Day is your opportunity to express your affection for unicorns, so show some colour and explore the majesty of unicorns with us!

The background of National Unicorn Day

The unicorn is a legendary creature with a single, large, spiraled, and conical horn protruding from its forehead. They appeared in early Mesopotamian art and were frequently mentioned in myths and legends from China, Greece, and India. In Greek mythology, authors firmly believed that unicorns roamed free in a distant domain. The Greek physician Ctesias wrote in his book ”On the Nature of Animals” that he believed India produced a horse with a single horn. Some argued that he was referring to the Indian Rhinoceros and not the unicorn. Persepolis was rumoured to contain unicorns in Iran, and the Hebrew Bible describes an animal named the ”re’em,” which some believe is the unicorn.

The unicorn has always been portrayed as a symbol of grace and purity, and its horn is said to have the ability to purify noxious water and cure disease. In mediaeval times, the fangs of the Narwhal whale were sold and advertised as unicorn horns.

The Celts, Romans, and Persians all described a single-horned, white, supernatural horse. The creature was said to symbolise power, grace, and independence. Since the 12th century, the unicorn has been a symbol on the Scottish coat of arms. Clearly, unicorns have been a part of our culture for a very long time, so the 2015 introduction of National Unicorn Day was a welcome development.
