According to estimates, the first inhabitants of Virginia arrived 18,000 years ago. The region's history can be traced back to a number of indigenous communities, most notably the 'Powhatan.'

National Virginia Day is an annual observance held on September 14. Virginia, officially known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located between the Atlantic Coast and the Appalachian Mountains in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions of the United States. This day commemorates the people, locations, and foods that existed in Virginia long before the arrival of European settlers. We also honour the history of Virginia and everything associated with the Commonwealth.

The background of National Virginia Day

According to estimates, the first inhabitants of Virginia arrived 18,000 years ago. The region’s history can be traced back to a number of indigenous communities, most notably the ‘Powhatan.’ Jamestown, Virginia, was founded by the London Company in 1607 as the first permanent English colony in the United States. This position is reflected in Virginia’s state appellation, The Old Dominion. Slave labour and land taken from displaced native tribes powered the colony’s booming plantation economy, but they also nurtured internal and external tensions. Virginia became a member of the United States in 1776 as one of the original 13 colonies during the American Revolution. Thomas Jefferson, another prominent Virginian, penned the Declaration of Independence that same year.

During the American Civil War, Virginia was divided when the state authority in Richmond supported the Confederacy. In 1861, Virginia seceded from the Union or left what was then the United States. This occurred at the beginning of the Civil War, which was fought between southern states, such as Virginia, that wanted to abandon the Union and northern states.

In spite of this, many of the state’s northern counties wished to remain in the Union, which led to the formation of West Virginia in 1863. Virginia rejoined the Union or the United States in 1870, roughly five years after the Civil War’s conclusion. Virginia celebrated the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the Jamestown Colony in 2007 with a quadricentennial event. According to the commemorations, Native Americans, Africans, and Europeans all played a significant role in shaping Virginia’s history.
