National Wonk Day 2024: Every year on January 9, National WONK Day honors the political aficionados and ardent supporters of Washington, D.C., as you may surely expect. A “WONK” is a person who has an interest in a particular subject; the phrase is particularly used to describe those who are heavily involved in politics. Really obedient people, contributing to the greater good. As a tribute to the citizens of the nation’s capital, iHeartRadio established WONK-FM in Washington in 2019. “We think WONKS deserve a day of recognition and a radio station to match!” the business declares. You deserve to play hard since you put in a lot of work.
The National WONK Day History
The radio has long been a commonplace item in human life. German physicist Heinrich Hertz initially detected these waves in 1886, and between 1895 and 1896, Guglielmo Marconi used his findings to create the first workable radio transmitters and receivers. However, radios didn’t become widely used until about 1900.
Reginald Fessenden began developing audio radio broadcasts at the turn of the 20th century, intending to replace earlier spark-gap transmissions. Later, on Christmas Eve 1906, Fessenden was able to arrange the first radio presentation, delivering passages from the “Bible” and playing “O Holy Night” on his violin. This was the first example of radio using amplitude modulation, or A.M.
Since then, radio shows have served a range of functions, including news and entertainment. In celebration of WONKs who call Washington, D.C. home, iHeartRadio created Washington’s WONK-FM in 2019. A “person who takes an enthusiastic or excessive interest in the specialized details of a particular subject or field, especially political policy,” according to academic definitions, is a WONK. “We think WONKS deserve a day of recognition and a radio station to match!” iHeartRadio responds to this. You deserve to play hard since you put in a lot of work.
