Navajo Code Talkers Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Navajo Code

According to the official C.I.A. website, Navajo was a nearly 'perfect' language used to construct military codes. This is why its brilliance has been chronicled in history and is still recognised even today.

Navajo Code Talkers Day, observed annually on August 14, is a significant day in the annals of the United States. This is due to the fact that the day honours the contributions made by Navajo marines during World War II. Yes, Navajo marines encoded and transmitted messages using a complex code based on the Navajo language at a time when covert communication was crucial to winning a war. Moreover, guess what? The code was never cracked by Japanese forces in the Pacific and was of considerable assistance to the United States Marine Corps. Celebrate the famous American heroes and their service to the nation on this day.

The background of Navajo Code Talkers Day

According to the official C.I.A. website, Navajo was a nearly ‘perfect’ language used to construct military codes. This is why its brilliance has been chronicled in history and is still recognised even today. However, the code was not the Navajo language itself; rather, it was a form of communication that was encrypted using that language. Due to the inability of many to decipher it, the code remained unbreakable throughout the duration of the conflict. The accomplishment of the code is commemorated annually by the American people. National Navajo Code Talkers Day will become a legal state holiday in 2020 as a result of legislation enacted by Governor Doug Ducey to recognise the valour of the Navajo Code Talkers and their crucial role in the victory of World War II. The Navajo Code Talkers, according to him, are “American heroes.”

World War II in the Pacific began in 1942, when the United States required an unbreakable code to ensure the success of military operations. Philip Johnston, the son of a missionary who had grown up in the Navajo Nation, proposed using the Navajo language as a code at this time. The United States government then recruited over 400 Navajo men to serve in the military during the conflict. The Navajo Code Talkers helped the United States win the conflict by transmitting over 800 messages without error. Thus, Navajo Code Talkers Day was instituted in 1982 by a presidential proclamation issued by President Ronald Reagan. Arizona passed legislation in 2014 designating August 14 as Navajo Code Talkers Day.
