Effective October 31, 1864, Nevada commenced its official membership in the United States Union as the 36th state. Nevada, in addition to West Virginia, was among the sole states to be bestowed with the honor of statehood throughout the Civil War. Following the telegraphing of the Nevada Constitution days prior to the November 8 presidential election, this occurred. This was documented as the largest and most costly telegraph transmission ever at the time. The expedited statehood of the territory served to secure three additional elector ballots for the reelection of Abraham Lincoln, thereby bolstering the Republican majorities in Congress.
