Before 1984, the concept of a pop group comprised exclusively of young men in the manner exemplified by New Kids on the Block did not exist in the music industry.
New Kids on the Block Day occurs annually on April 24. You can be excused for not knowing who the prominent boy band is today. N.K.O.T.B., which was formed in 1984 and is widely regarded as the forefather of the modern boy band, was not an overnight sensation until the publication of its 1988 hit album “Hangin’ Tough,” which made it a global overnight sensation. Members of the group and their music had a significant impact on the music industry and paved the way for subsequent groups such as The Back Street Boys, NSYNC, and the Korean boy band B.T.S.
Before 1984, the concept of a pop group comprised exclusively of young men in the manner exemplified by New Kids on the Block did not exist in the music industry. Donnie Wahlberg was the first member to be recruited, along with his high school friends and, briefly, his sibling Mark Wahlberg. Jonathan and Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood comprised the ultimate lineup.
In 1986, their manager, Maurice Starr, was successful in obtaining a record contract for them with Columbia Records. Starr required the group to rehearse and perform songs and dances after school, on weekends, and during school vacations. However, their debut album, “New Kids on the Block,” was dominated by bubblegum pop, had limited success, and was primarily played in their native Boston. Columbia Records considered disbanding the group after their second album, “Hangin’ Tough,” appeared destined for failure. They quickly became the first adolescent group to have five top 10 singles from a single album.
At the height of their prominence, they were the most profitable touring group in the United States, attracting Coca-Cola as a tour sponsor. In 1992, the group was accused of lip-syncing their live performances and confronted scandals. This effectively altered the group’s trajectory, and despite the fact that the accusations were false and the complainant recanted their statement, the group separated from Starr the following year.
After severing ties with their producer, they released their fourth album, “Face the Music,” which failed to garner traction or generate album sales comparable to their previous efforts. The band would eventually disband in 1995. In 2008, thirteen years later, they reunited and enjoyed success and tours.

B.T.S., an unprecedented global boy band phenomenon, is the only K-Pop group to lead the U.S. music charts.
The original name of New Kids on the Block was Nynuk, a throwaway name devised by producer Starr; Columbia Records forced them to change it.
As a result of their inability to contain the hysterical crowds, many European hotels banned the band from staying there after the release of their debut album internationally.
