New Year’s Eve 2023: Only once a year, on December 31, the final day of the final month of what normally seems like the longest year ever but went by far too quickly, is New Year’s Eve celebrated.
Many of us don’t think about why we say goodbye to one year and welcome a new one on December 31. Even those who don’t celebrate the start of a new year with elaborate plans at midnight on December 31 honor the tradition by reflecting on the year that has passed and setting goals for the one that lies ahead. The last day of the Gregorian calendar year is December 31, or New Year’s Eve. The majority of the ancient world used a variety of calendaring systems to keep track of time before the Gregorian calendar was accepted as the standard worldwide.
Pope Gregory XIII instituted the Gregorian calendar in October 1582. The Gregorian calendar replaced an earlier Roman calendar that was based on the lunar cycle of the Earth’s moon. At the recommendation of Greek astronomer and mathematician Sosigenes of Alexandria, the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar instituted the Gregorian calendar, a modified form of the Julian calendar, during his reign in 44 B.C.
A few days had to be removed when, on October 4, 1582, the lunar cycle calendar gave way to the solar year calendar. Pope Gregory so proclaimed October 15, 1582, to be the day following October 4, 1582. Ask not what became of all those unfortunate people whose birthdays fell between October 5 and October 14.
According to the ancient lunar calendar system, the year now began on January 1, rather than April 1, when the pope instituted the new calendar on October 4, 1582. Instead of an astronomical basis, the ancient feast honored Janus, the god of beginnings and doors. A new calendar started on January 1st seemed like a wonderful idea.
On New Year’s Eve, you either celebrate the end of the year and feel relieved or you reflect on how quickly the year passed. People use this day in a variety of ways. While some choose to head out and party all night long or take in the elaborate festivities, others choose to stay home and watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks on television. It doesn’t matter whose team you support; there is undoubtedly excitement in the air. Everybody gets quite excited about some annual events, including the big party and Ball Drop in Times Square, New York, which formally welcomes the New Year. In addition, there are customs practiced all around the world that are said to bring good fortune come January 1st, such drinking champagne at midnight or eating 365 black-eyed peas.
