April 1 is Nickelodeon Anniversary Celebration Day in the United States. This day commemorates the inauguration of the first children’s cable channel in the United States. Nickelodeon and Sesame Workshop partnered in 1999 to create “Noggin,” an educational brand consisting of a cable channel and an online game. “Nicktoons Junior” was launched in 2002. In 2009, the teen-oriented channels “TEENick” and “The N” were merged into a single channel called “TeenNick.”
Approximately 87.167 million U.S. households currently have access to the channel. In addition to producing its own feature films, Nickelodeon occasionally acquires theatrically-released films for broadcast. In 2002, Nickelodeon and Mattel entered into a long-term broadcasting agreement to air films and specials based on Mattel’s “Barbie” figurines. The first Barbie movie to air on Nickelodeon was “Barbie as Rapunzel” on November 24, 2002.
During the channel’s annual events, which take place all over the globe each year, children can engage in a variety of outdoor activities. Some of the network’s international channels and websites are routinely disabled these days to encourage more children to participate in the initiative.
