The House of Tupou is a continuation of the Tu'i Kanokupolu Dynasty, which is descended from three ancient Dynasties: Tu'i Tonga, Tu'i Ha'atakalaua, and Tu'i Kanokupolu.
Although His Majesty King Tupou VI’s actual birthday is July 12, we observe his official birthday on July 4. This day is a public holiday in Tonga, and if it occurs on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a holiday. The celebrations commence on July 1 and continue through July 4. Following a thanksgiving prayer at the palace, a royal luncheon is conducted on the grounds of the palace. Traditional entertainment such as lakalaka, mā’ulu’ulu, and group performances are performed. At the beginning and end of the royal event, the military will conduct a parade and flag ceremony, which is frequently recorded and broadcast on radio and television. He had no offspring, so King Tupou VI succeeded to the Throne of Tonga.
Tupou VI was anointed on July 4, 2015, which was also the birthday of his late father. He has observed this day publicly for many years, but he has also hosted private celebrations at the Villa Royal Residence with members of the extended Royal Family on occasion.
