Then, in 1785, James Hutton authored and delivered a presentation titled “Theory of the Earth” to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in which he described his conviction that the earth was significantly older than previously believed. In 1809, William Maclure created the first geological map of the United States, a work he accomplished by personally travelling the country for two years. With the discovery of radiometric dating in the early 20th century, scientists were finally able to provide an accurate estimate of the age of the earth by analysing the radioactive impurities present in rocks. It helped scientists recognise that the Earth is an extremely old rock!
