One Boston Day, observed annually on April 15, is an American holiday created in response to the April 2013 explosions at the Boston Marathon. It is a holiday created from the deaths of some, the injuries of many others, and the valour of first responders. Following the explosions, police and other personnel promptly took control of the situation and did their best to get as many people to safety as possible. One Boston Day is a time to honour the resiliency and fortitude demonstrated by the people of Boston and the rest of the world in response to the Boston bombings.

The background of One Boston Day

One Boston Day was established as a consequence of the April 15, 2013 bombings in Boston, Massachusetts. The 2013 Boston Marathon, which was organised by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A. ), was the 117th running of the annual marathon conducted in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition, it hosted the second World Marathon Majors in 2013, in which over 23,000 participants participated.

The running event was disrupted by a terrorist attack in which two consecutive explosions occurred near the finish line and on the sidewalk. After the terrorist attack, the competition was suspended, and many competitors were unable to compete in the remainder of the match. The assault occurred nearly two hours after the completion of the competition’s races. Three spectators were killed and 264 others were injured when a series of two explosions occurred near the finish line, with 17 of the injured reported to be in critical condition and at least 14 requiring amputations. The attack, dubbed “The Boston Marathon bombings,” received extensive international media coverage. Over 5,000 participants who were unable to complete the race due to its interruption were awarded medals.

On May 16, one month after the incident, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) granted early entrance into the 2014 race to those who ran at least half the distance but were unable to finish the 2013 Marathon due to the attack. They also waived eligibility requirements for these participants. A sculpture by Pablo Eduardo was erected on Boylston Street in August 2019 as a memorial to the tragic occurrences of April 15, 2013.
