The Pa Togan Nengminza Sangma History

The British Empire annexed the Jaintia kingdom in 1835, and Northeastern India came to be known as the “Scotland of the East.” In response, locals staged a rebellion under the leadership of liberation fighter U Kiang Nangbah. But the movement failed because the British launched a strong counterattack. They had achieved hegemony in the Garo Hills at this point.

Lt. W.J. Williamson, the Assistant Commissioner to The Hills, imposed British rule over half of the district in 1866. They went to tremendous lengths by 1872 to seize control of the Garo Hills, including marching in an expeditionary fashion to the east, south, and west to seize the whole area. The native tribes put up a fierce fight against the British soldiers during this military campaign, most notably Pa-Togan Negminza Sangma, the leader of the Garo, who refused to submit to the imperial forces.

The British troops set up camp in the Garo Hills at Matcha Rongkrek in December 1872. Pa-Togan and the other members of his Garo tribe plotted an attack while they were asleep. The local tribes had little time to prepare due to the sudden nature of the British occupation. But their fierce resilience more than made up for what they lacked in weapons. In this attack, the British quickly gained the upper hand through retaliation. The British army’s guns were too strong for the Garo’s swords. Nevertheless, the Garo soldiers fought to the death, and a hail of bullets killed Pa-Togan, the last man standing.

The British Empire was unable to withstand Pa-Togan’s valiant attempt to defend his tribe and territory. Together with U Tirot Sing and U Kiang Nangbah, two other Garo soldiers, his bravery and patriotism have been immortalized.
