Peasants’ Day in Tanzania 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Tanzania places a high value on agriculture. Agriculture contributes nearly a third of Tanzania's gross domestic product and accounts for 85 percent of exports. Approximately half of all Tanzanians are employed in agriculture.

Peasants’Day is observed annually on August 8 in Tanzania to honour the cultivators who keep society nourished and functioning. This day has also been referred to as Workers’ Day, Industry’s Day, and Farmer’s Day. Originally, it was known as Saba Saba, which translates to “seven, seven.” This resulted in some public confusion when Farmers’ Day was established on August 8. Consequently, the two holidays were merged and are now observed as a single holiday. This is a public holiday for the general populace and a day for communal meals, imbibing, dancing, and music.

The background of Peasants’ Day

Tanzania places a high value on agriculture. Agriculture contributes nearly a third of Tanzania’s gross domestic product and accounts for 85 percent of exports. Approximately half of all Tanzanians are employed in agriculture. The most important food commodity is maize, and the most important cash crop is sugar. Even though agriculture plays a vital role in the economy and prosperity of the nation, it still confronts productivity challenges.

Peasants’ Day or Farmers’ Day is a day to honour farmers and recognise their contribution to the country, similar to other African nations that rely on agriculture and farming. It is an excellent opportunity to share new agricultural technologies and innovations, enhance education, and highlight best practises. Beginning on August 1, eight agricultural festivals are scheduled for August 8.

Before 1992, Peasants’ Day was celebrated on July 7 under the name ‘Saba Saba’ Day. As the designation of August 8 as a national holiday caused some confusion, the name was altered to Farmers’ Day or ‘Nane Nane,’ which means eight, eight. Some individuals would take both days off, while others would take the seventh day off and the eighth day off. Before both festivities were merged into a single day, the city of Mwanza hosted a massive agricultural festival. At the aforementioned festivals, producers from all over the nation would display their produce.
