Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day was established in 2014 by MBJungle Foundation founder Davis Rogers. MBJungle Foundation was dedicated to the memory of his mother who passed away on September 13, 1996.
On September 13, companion Birth Defect Awareness Day is observed to raise awareness about companion birth defects and their mental health. There are numerous causes of birth defects in animals, but a responsible pet owner can help prevent some of them. Both inbreeding and overbreeding can result in physical and behavioural problems in pets. Pets require caretakers who are willing to provide for their needs. As a responsible pet owner, you must educate yourself on the significance of birth defect prevention, treatment, appropriate care, and identification methods.
Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day was established in 2014 by MBJungle Foundation founder Davis Rogers. MBJungle Foundation was dedicated to the memory of his mother who passed away on September 13, 1996. Therefore, Rogers observes the date annually as Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day. The mission of the foundation is to raise public awareness and educate the public about companion birth defects and mental health issues.
Common birth defects in pets include cleft palates, limb deformities, and hernias. These abnormalities are detectable at or shortly after birth. Defects such as dental issues may not be detected until your companion reaches a certain age. In addition, some defects may not be detectable for months or even years, necessitating a veterinary evaluation. If abnormalities are detected, the veterinarian can discuss treatment options. Nutritional deficiencies, infectious diseases contracted by the mother, and teratogens (chemical toxins) are common causes of birth defects in neonatal pets.
Undernourished expectant pet mothers can result in low birth or brain weight, behavioural abnormalities, and infant mortality. Deficiency in calcium can result in skeletal abnormalities, especially in gigantic dog breeds. foetal brain injury, foetal death, and growth retardation can occur if the mother is infected with parvovirus. Insecticides, fungicides, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals can also cause birth defects. Carbaryl, an insecticide present in some flea powders, can cause birth defects such as short jaws and lack of tails if applied to pregnant women.
