Every year, Pet Owners Independence Day is observed on April 18. This holiday seeks to reverse the conventional role of pet owners as breadwinners. On this day, all participating pet owners are permitted to relax at home while their pets attempt to earn a living. There are undoubtedly some logistical issues with the concept — it is inconceivable to imagine a hamster managing company accounting or a cat defending a case in court — but it is a great mental exercise for pet owners who are exhausted and need a break.
Pets have been kept by humans for thousands of years. Archaeology suggests a period of 12,000 years, and it is a generally accepted fact that canines were the first domesticated animals. Ancient Greeks and Romans were known to publicly lament the loss of their canine companions by inscribing tombstones for their departed pets. Ancient Egyptians frequently named their canines and baboons and buried them alongside their owners.
The modern idea of canine ownership originated in Victorian England. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the social acceptability of owning a companion increased gradually. As soon as aristocrats began keeping canines for both hunting and companionship, pets became a status symbol. After the industrial revolution, the rise of the middle class caused pet ownership to become a component of the so-called ‘bourgeois culture.’ As the prevalence of pets increased, the pet trade became lucrative, and soon London’s streets were filled with vendors selling various breeds. As the breed of the dog became a reflection of its owner’s social status, the significance of the dog’s pedigree increased.
Breeders continue to profit from the demand for purebred canines as a result of these attitudes. However, there is a growing demand in society to end the practise of breeding and transition to adopting pets regardless of their pedigree, with the slogan “adopt, don’t shop” frequently cited.
