Every year on July 5 in the United Kingdom, Pet Remembrance Day is observed in memory of cherished companion animals that have passed away. Did you know that canines, the first animals to be domesticated, were also the first pets? Pet Remembrance Day was founded by “Pets Magazine” and Lars Anderson, proprietor of the 3D printing company Arty Lobster. On Pet Remembrance Day, pet owners congregate to reminisce about their deceased pets, share photos of them, and recall the wonderful times they shared with them when they were alive. On Pet Remembrance Day, all companion animals are honoured, including dogs, cats, horses, and ferrets.
The origins of pet ownership can be traced to the domestication of animals by humans. Dogs are believed to have been the first domesticated animals, as well as the first companions. Archaeological evidence suggests that humans first kept dogs as companions approximately 12,000 years ago. Scholars believed that the primary reason for this relationship between humans and dogs was the mutual advantages they received. With their speed, powerful jaws, and tracking skills, dogs assisted humans in capturing prey in exchange for a steady supply of food and comfort. During this time, humans began to bury canines and cats alongside their owners, and they were sometimes buried with valuable objects.
Middle Easterners began using horses in chariot battles during antiquity, a practise that extended to the rest of the Old World, such as ancient Greece and ancient Rome. This practise fostered a relationship of affection between humans and animals. The relationship between Alexander the Great and his steed Bucephalus is a well-known example. In ancient Egypt, humans began to give their dogs names. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, only the British aristocracy maintained pets as a symbol of their social and economic standing.
With the advent of the middle class in the 19th century, pet ownership became a component of bourgeois culture. By the end of the 19th century, pet ownership and care had become a substantial industry in the majority of Europe and the United States. Pets are gaining significance in human socioeconomic existence. In addition to providing companionship, pets provide their owners with economic benefits and entertainment through pet events, television, and social media.
