Philippines Republic Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Philippines

Independence of the Philippines is commemorated annually on July 4 with the observance of Philippines Republic Day. The holiday, which is also known as Philippine–American Friendship Day, was formerly known as Independence Day. It commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Manila in 1946, which liberated the Philippines from American rule. This day marks the conclusion of more than 48 years of American rule, from 1898 to 1946.

The background of Philippines Republic Day

The Philippines have an extensive past. It was the only country in Southeast Asia colonised by Western powers. It is not affiliated with Hinduism or Buddhism. Its population consists of immigrants from other Asian countries who arrived in cycles. There are 175 linguistically diverse ethnic communities. A shared Filipino identity has only recently begun to emerge. The introduction of Islam occurred in the 1500s. In the mid-1500s, Ferdinand Magellan was the first Spanish explorer there. Although Spain attempted to impose Catholicism on the Filipinos, Islam persisted. Their extensive and frequently turbulent history has produced resilient people. They take great pride in their families and are deeply devout. They are highly respectful individuals who frequently assist one another. They enjoy festivities and celebrations, and their Christmas celebrations begin in August.

The Philippine Islands were under American control from 1898 to 1946, first as a territory and commencing in 1935 as a commonwealth. During World War II, the Empire of Japan invaded the islands governed by the government-in-exile of the Commonwealth. The battles were protracted and violent. Some Japanese soldiers fought until the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. The republic obtained complete independence on July 4, 1946.

Manuel Roxas retook his oath as the first President of the Republic of the Philippines, eliminating the required pledge of allegiance to the United States of America. The new republic eventually gained international recognition when governments signed covenants with it. It was impolite to remind the population of the former Third Republic following the suspension of the 1935 Constitution under martial law and its subsequent replacement by the 1972 Constitution.
