During World War II, the Empire of Japan invaded the islands governed by the government-in-exile of the Commonwealth. The battles were protracted and violent. Some Japanese soldiers fought until the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. The republic obtained complete independence on July 4, 1946.
Manuel Roxas retook his oath as the first President of the Republic of the Philippines, eliminating the required pledge of allegiance to the United States of America. The new republic eventually gained international recognition when governments signed covenants with it. It was impolite to remind the population of the former Third Republic following the suspension of the 1935 Constitution under martial law and its subsequent replacement by the 1972 Constitution.
