Pioneer Day, observed every year on July 24, commemorates the advent of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pioneers in the state of Utah. After years of religious persecution and continuous travel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pioneers settled in Utah in 1847 under the leadership of Brigham Young. A mob had killed their prophet, Joseph Smith, a few years earlier. Most members fled Illinois out of fear for their lives and in search of a more tranquil location to reside. Today, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community celebrate the day by conducting rallies, parades, and contests in Utah and the surrounding states where Mormon pioneers originally settled. Many also observe Pioneer Day as a patriotic holiday. In numerous U.S. states, pioneers, particularly Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pioneers, have laboured tirelessly to establish a name for themselves and their community.

The background of Pioneer Day

The initial event is the entrance of Brigham Young and his followers into the Salt Lake Valley (at the time, Mexican territory). American politician and religious leader Brigham Young. He was the first city governor of Utah and the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Joseph Smith was president before Young, and he was regarded as a prophet. Smith and his sibling Hyrum were persecuted and imprisoned for their religious beliefs. In 1844, an enraged mob broke into their prison cell and murdered the brothers. Following the death of their prophet, LDS members convened an emergency meeting to determine who would now lead the church. Young and Sidney Rigdon competed for the role, but Young won. Rigdon refused to recognise his defeat, and shortly thereafter he established his own sect.

Meanwhile, Young assumed leadership of the LDS. The community as a whole continued to persecute and discriminate against the faith. Young decided in 1847 to depart Illinois with a group of followers. After months of arduous travel, the group finally reached the valley. They established a colony and founded the city of Salt Lake City. Many Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members became farmers of turnips and potatoes and constructed a dam as the community expanded. The ‘Promised Land’ had been discovered and transformed into a place where all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints could live in peace and harmony. Utah is the most populous state in the United States, followed by Nevada, Arizona, and Idaho. Since it is an official Utah community holiday, many businesses close for the day, either wholly or partially. Universities and schools were also suspended for the day. In their spare time, community members attend and participate in events such as parades, cookouts, pageants, and fireworks displays. Some individuals travel the “Mormon Trail” to reenact the entry of Young’s adherents into Utah.
