The background of Police Commemoration Day

As a result of occurrences in 1958 and 1959, the relationship between India and China was altering. There were escalating political and geographical issues that caused conflict between nations. It is believed that China launched its first attack against India in the Aksai Chin region on October 21, 1959. According to reports, the People’s Liberation Army attacked the Intelligence Bureau and Central Reserve Police Force (C.R.P.F), killing ten individuals and capturing seven others as captives.

The day before, three reconnaissance parties were dispatched from Ladakh as part of an Indian expedition to Lanak La, according to official accounts from the time. Only two of these parties, however, returned. The following morning, D.C.I.O. Shri Karam Singh headed a team of twenty personnel from the Intelligence Bureau and C.R.P.F. to search for the missing party. They rode horses while the rest of the personnel followed on foot. Around noon, the Chinese army opened fire and hurled grenades at Singh’s unprotected party. The attack resulted in the murder of ten men, the capture of seven others, and the injury of the remaining men, who were fortunate enough to escape.

Three weeks had passed before the Chinese delivered over the bodies of the martyrs to the nation. They were then cremated with police honours at the Ladakh Hot Springs. Alongside the widespread fury that swept the nation, there was also an outpouring of gratitude for the valiant soldiers who fought to the bitter end. In January 1960, the 21st of October was designated as ‘Commemoration Day’ at the annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories.
