The Pony Express was a courier service that utilised horse-mounted riders to deliver mail, newspapers, and other packages. This innovative mail delivery service ran between California and Missouri for 18 months, from April 3, 1860 to October 24, 1861, when it was discontinued. The Pony Express was established after California’s population boom and rise to prominence as a consequence of the Gold Rush.

The massive influx of prospectors, investors, and merchants into California necessitated the existence of a quick route for the delivery of mail and other communications to the Pacific Coast. Alexander Majors, William Russell, and William B. Waddell, who were already freight and drayage magnates, established the Pony Express. The Pony Express, formally known as Central Overland California and Pikes zenith Express Company, at its zenith employed 6,000 men, had 75,000 oxen, warehouses, and thousands of waggons. Prior to the invention of the transcontinental telegraph, the corporation was the most direct east-west communication link in the West.

During its 18-month operation, the Pony Express reduced the time it took for messages to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to approximately ten days, which was of immense economic significance to the United States. The Pony Express preferred to hire young, light, and tenacious riders because the owners believed that lighter riders would allow the horses to run quicker and carry more freight. While the average coast-to-coast horseback journey took ten days, the journey that conveyed Lincoln’s inaugural address took only seven days and seventeen hours! Unfortunately, the Pony Express faltered financially and ceased operations within 18 months of the establishment of the faster transcontinental telegraph service. It was a pioneer in the establishment of a unified transcontinental communications system that could operate 24/7.
