They also chose 1640 because that was the year that a revolt broke out in Catalonia, Spain. The war went on for 28 years, until 1668 when Spain accepted Portugal’s independence. It was already a colonial power, the Spanish army was fighting in Catalonia, and there were wars with the Germans, the French, the English, and the Dutch. All of these things helped Portugal win its freedom.
