Because the king died without having a child, Spain took over Portugal in 1581. Portugal stayed under Spanish rule for another 60 years.
Portugal Independence Day 2023: A holiday called Portugal Independence Day is held every year on December 1. That year, 1668, the country got its freedom from Spain. In honour of the return of authority after Spanish rule from 1580 to 1640, today is celebrated. Portugal has become a foreign power since then and has successfully taken over countries in Asia and Africa. It is a public holiday in Portugal on July 14, so all schools and companies are closed. The country celebrates the day with a lot of joy. A lot of people get together to sing, dance, go to carnivals, and support their country. Portugal has become a major spot for sports and tourists these days.
Because the king died without having a child, Spain took over Portugal in 1581. Portugal stayed under Spanish rule for another 60 years. The Spanish, on the other hand, made the Portuguese unhappy by raising taxes on Portuguese trade ships and trying to make Portugal a part of Spain. Things went badly when the Portuguese aristocrats lost power in both Madrid and Portugal. The Portuguese Restoration War, also called “The Acclamation War,” began on December 1, 1640, after a series of tense events that led to a revolt.
The year and the day of the revolt are both important. The Portuguese chose December 1 because the Spanish lords who lived in Portugal would be leaving for Christmas. They also chose 1640 because that was the year that a revolt broke out in Catalonia, Spain. The war went on for 28 years, until 1668 when Spain accepted Portugal’s independence. It was already a colonial power, the Spanish army was fighting in Catalonia, and there were wars with the Germans, the French, the English, and the Dutch. All of these things helped Portugal win its freedom.
There were 28 years of wars, but there weren’t many big fights. In fact, there were only five main fights. A lot of the war was made up of small fights and raids. During the war, the English and Dutch also helped Portugal weaken the enemy they shared. After the Spanish had to leave, the Portuguese House of Braganza took over as kings and queens.
