Day of Restoring Independence, or Portugal Independence Day is a national event in Portugal that marks the day that the country rose up against Spanish rule and got its freedom back after 60 years of Spanish rule. On December 1, 1640, a small group of people planned an attack on the royal house in Lisbon, which led to the removal of the Vicereine of Portugal. During protests in the Terreiro do Paco, which was Lisbon’s main square at the time, Margaret of Savoy tried to calm the people down but failed. King João IV, who came from Portugal’s most important noble family, took the throne the same day it was given to him. During King João IV’s whole rule, he fought hard to keep Spain from taking over Portugal. Portugal and the Dutch Republic made a deal to work together on June 12, 1641. Both sides disobeyed it, and it had no impact on Dutch-ruled Brazil or Angola at the time.

Soon after Afonso VI turned 18 in 1662, Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa, 3rd Count of Castelo Melhor, became friendly with the mentally ill king. He was able to convince the king that his mother was planning to take his throne and send him away from Portugal. As a sign that he was in charge, Afonso sent his mother to a convent and made Castelo Melhor his hidden notary. Castelo Melhor could do the work of the first minister because of this post. It was Afonso’s weakness that made Castelo Melhor almost ruler of Portugal.
