On Pramuka Day, which is annually celebrated on August 14, Indonesians honour their national cadet organisation. This holiday commemorates Gerakan Pramuka Indonesia, the largest scout association in the world, as well as the organization’s first public parade in 1961. Scouting has existed since the beginning of the 20th century and was introduced to the Dutch East Indies in 1912. In 2013, it became an integral and mandatory element of the curriculum for Indonesian students, which has helped Gerakan Pramuka become the world’s largest scouting organisation.
They can be found in their uniforms reciting scout laws, working diligently to earn badges, or selling delicious cookies. We can always rely on a scout’s word, regardless of where we discover them. Today, we honour a distinguished body of scouts: the Pramuka scouts!
The scout movement dates back to the first decade of the 20th century, when Lieutenant General Robert Baden-Powell founded Brownsea Island Scout Camp to test concepts for his book “Scouting for Boys.” Consequently, females were also allowed to participate in scouting through the Girl Guides. This was the beginning of a global movement with over 38 million members and several international organisations. The Dutch East Indies, now known as Indonesia, were introduced to Scouting in 1912 by the Netherlands Pathfinder Organisation. In 1949, when Indonesia obtained independence from the Netherlands, there were over sixty scouting organisations in the country. Due to Indonesia’s geographical diversity, administration and supervision of these scouting organisations were difficult, necessitating the formation of a singular scouting organisation.
Two years later, the thirteen strongest Scout and Guide organisations formed a governing body, Ikatan Pandu Indonesia (Ipindo), under the patronage of President Sukarno. This paved the way for Indonesia’s membership in the Asia-Pacific region of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (W.O.S.M. ). Nearly a decade later, at the beginning of the period of Guided Democracy, Ipindo representatives and their patron united all Scouting and Guiding organisations under the name Gerakan Pramuka. Its first public parade was conducted on August 14, 1961, a date that has since become known as Pramuka Day.
