Prešeren Day 2024: History and Facts about Prešeren

Prešeren Day, a Slovene holiday honoring the late Slovene poet, is celebrated in Slovenia, a country known for its rich cultural heritage.

Prešeren Day 2024: February 8th is Slovenia’s Prešeren Day! This day honors the passing on February 8, 1849, of Slovene poet and greatest Slovene classical author France Prešeren. One of the Slovene holidays that is most extensively observed is Prešeren Day. Along with many other cultural events being honored, free admission is offered to all state and national galleries and museums on this holiday. Not only is the festival joyfully commemorated in Slovenia but also in other Slovene communities worldwide.

Prešeren Day History

On December 3, 1800, France Prešeren was born in Vrba, Gorenjska, into a peasant family. He wrote a poem in 1844 titled “Zdravljica (A Toast),” which is the seventh stanza of the Slovenian national anthem. He was well-known for his sonnets. Slovene artists were suppressed and prevented from expressing themselves throughout World War II as long as Slovenia was under occupation. The commemoration of Prešeren’s passing evolved into a key day in the history of Slovenian cultural acceptance.

In 1945, the day was declared a cultural holiday following the end of World War II. In 1991, it was officially declared a work-free holiday after being observed as a public holiday for a while. The same year that the nation declared its independence. Many people objected when Prešeren Day was declared a day off from work in 1991. Many contended that it would result in the prohibition of the holiday designed to honor cultural events. The poet’s birthday, which falls on December 3, became well-known for being an optional holiday as a result of the mayhem.

Currently, there is little difference in how both days are honored; only Prešeren Day in February is recognized as a national holiday. On February 7, the eve of the celebration the Prešeren Fund Awards and the Prešeren Awards, the highest Slovenian acknowledgment for cultural accomplishments, are unveiled. The day honors the Slovenian culture created to raise cultural awareness. Even though it originated in Slovenia, many Slovenian groups celebrated the occasion all over the world.
