The background of President’s Day in Equatorial Guinea

Before we venture into its fascinating history and the origins of President’s Day, there are a few things you should know about Equatorial Guinea. This nation is positioned on the west coast of Africa. Gabon and Cameroon, respectively, constitute their eastern and southern borders. It has a 20-kilometer-long coastline bordered by a vast tropical rainforest teeming with flora and fauna.

President’s Day is a public holiday in Equatorial Guinea commemorating the birthday of President Teodoro Obiang. Obiang is the second-longest serving non-loyal national leader in the globe in terms of consecutive terms in office. He matriculated from military school and held numerous positions under the presidency of his uncle, Francisco Macias Nguema, until August 1979, when he overthrew him in a military coup.

This coup began after Macias issued the order to execute several members of their shared family, including Obiang’s sibling. Macias was placed on trial for his crimes, which included the decade-long genocide of the Bubi people, because Obiang and others believed the president had lost his mind and overthrew him in a coup. Following his conviction, Macias was sentenced to death. On September 29, 1979, he was executed by firing squad. In 1982, Equatorial Guinea reverted to civilian rule, and Obiang was elected for a seven-year term as president.
