Puducherry Liberation Day 2023: Every year on November 1, people in the Indian union state of Puducherry celebrate Puducherry Liberation Day. These were some of the times that the French East India Company ruled over Puducherry in the 1600s. The French colonial power ruled over French India from Puducherry, which used to be called Pondicherry. Puducherry was part of French India, along with other French settlements like Chandernagor, Mahé, Yanam, Karaikal, and Masulipatam. On this day in 1954, French India was turned over to the Republic of India, which is celebrated on this holiday.
The city of Puducherry is on the southeast coast of India. Its past goes back to the beginning of time, but no one has written it down. Instead, Puducherry’s past is only known to have begun when the Dutch, Portuguese, English, and French came.
In the fourth century A.D., the Pallava Kingdom of Kanchipuram was in charge of the Puducherry area. A number of southern dynasties ruled Puducherry in the ages that followed. The Chola of Thanjavur took power in the 10th century, and the Pandya Kingdom took power in the 13th. After a short time of Muslim kings and queens coming in from the north, the Vijayanagar Empire controlled most of southern India until 1638, when the Sultan of Bijapur took over Gingee.
In 1674, the French East India Company set up a trade hub at Pondicherry. In time, this settlement turned into India’s most important French base. The Dutch and British trade companies also wanted to do business with India. This caused wars in these European countries, which spread to the Indian subcontinent. In the years that followed, Pondicherry changed hands many times. In 1693, the Dutch took over Puducherry, but the Treaty of Ryswick in 1699 gave it back to France. As soon as the British took over India in the late 1850s, they let the French keep their colonies there. The places known as Pondicherry, Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal, and Chandernagar were all in French India until 1954.
India’s freedom in 1947 led to the joining of France’s Indian lands with what used to be British India. The official date that France became a part of the Indian Union was not until 1962. The areas that used to be part of French India were officially given to the Republic of India on November 1, 1954. It is now a part of India after becoming a union state.
A lot of history went into making the world what it is today. Many things had to be given up so that we could enjoy our rights and lives today. This kind of day makes us think about things that happened in the past.
People are thankful for those who fought for freedom through trials and wars on this day. It also makes us grateful for the people who still serve and guard our country.
The world can get a lot from Puducherry. With its wide range of beautiful beaches and tasty coffee, Puducherry is a place that everyone should see.
