Pulse Night of Remembrance is a commemoration day observed annually in the United States on June 12th. On this date in 2016, a mass shooting at the homosexual nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida, resulted in 49 deaths and 53 injuries. This particular day, Pulse hosted “Latin Night,” a weekly Saturday evening event attended primarily by Latinos. When the horrific incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m., approximately 320 people were still inside the club, which was serving its final beverages.

The background of Pulse Night of Remembrance

In a 9-1-1 call made immediately after he began firing, the perpetrator, Omar Mateen, pledged allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. He attributed the attack to the U.S. assassination of Abu Waheeb in Iraq the previous month. The incident was classified as a terrorist act by FBI investigators.

The preponderance of the victims were Latino, as Pulse was celebrating “Latin Night.” It was the deadliest single-gunman mass shooting in U.S. history until the 2017 Las Vegas massacre. In addition, it was the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since September 11, 2001. The history of violence against L.G.B.T.Q. persons in the United States includes assaults on gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people. Those who experience such maltreatment are believed to be violating heteronormative conventions and gender and sexual role expectations.
