Purple Heart Day 2024: Date, History, Facts about Purple Heart Day

In 1782, George Washington bestowed the first Purple Heart, which was designated as a Badge of Merit. Due to a lack of funds, the award was a means for the Continental Army to recognise enlisted personnel who were deserving of recognition.

The 7th of August is Purple Heart Day, a day dedicated to giving back. On this day, Americans honour and remember the brave men and women who served their country and were wounded or slain in the line of duty. These individuals are awarded the Purple Heart in the honour of the President, and this day is dedicated to remembering their service and sacrifice. Some states, counties, and municipalities observe a moment of silence, as do some athletics and entertainment organisations. Additionally, military and veteran organisations conduct memorial events. Join us in honouring those who have been awarded the Purple Heart.

The background of Purple Heart Day

In 1782, George Washington bestowed the first Purple Heart, which was designated as a Badge of Merit. Due to a lack of funds, the award was a means for the Continental Army to recognise enlisted personnel who were deserving of recognition. The distinction is awarded for “any singularly meritorious action.” It was designed with a fine silver edge running through a piece of silk. Washington issued only three of the insignia himself and instead delegated the responsibility to subordinates.

The Badge of Merit fell out of use, but it was revived and reintroduced in 1932 as the Purple Heart. In addition to honouring those wounded in combat, this version of the Purple Heart also recognised meritorious conduct. In 1944, the policy was modified and the Purple Heart was assigned its current purpose, namely to honour those who have been wounded or killed in combat.

General Douglas MacArthur was the first recipient of the modern Purple Heart for his service in the Pacific theatre of World War II. Over the course of history, 1,8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded.

Purple Heart Day was first observed in 2014 and has since been celebrated annually. It is an opportunity to honour the valour of those who have fought for the United States and to ensure that their valour is never forgotten.
