Since ancient times, silence has been a form of prayer and meditation. The majority of religions extol the benefits of peace and quiet to one's mental and physical health.
Quiet Day is annually observed on February 25. Quiet Day is about pausing and appreciating the sound of silence, as its name suggests. Noise is ubiquitous, whether on the train, in a bustling office, in a pub, a classroom, or even at home! There appears to be no way to escape the din of contemporary existence. Constant exposure to noise can be overwhelming, so it is important to take a break from time to time. We are aware that silence is beneficial for both the body and the mind. Peace calms us and helps us regain our equilibrium.
Since ancient times, silence has been a form of prayer and meditation. The majority of religions extol the benefits of peace and quiet to one’s mental and physical health. Our voices and active interaction with others have served to keep us spiritually silent and disconnected from the world around us, and in some peculiar ways, from the very people with whom we interact daily. The purpose of Quiet Day is to remind us to slow down and give silence a chance.
In India and numerous other Asian countries, there are 10-day meditation retreats where time is spent in quiet contemplation. These are “vipassana” retreats, which translates to “to see things as they are.” This ancient Buddhist practise is still prevalent today. Even though Quiet Day is only one day, the principles taught in these retreats can be applied to daily life.
Peace and clarity can open our minds to new experiences and inspire us to live more meaningful lives if we surround ourselves with them. Daily, we are surrounded by the sounds of the television, the radio, and our loved ones. Quiet Day is the day to engage in some quiet reflection, rest our vocal cords, and simply listen to and connect with the world around us. Take some time for yourself and listen to your inner voice of wisdom on this day.
