On August 28, 2013, Deborah Barnes had to bid goodbye to her cat, Mr. Jazz. Deborah published an emotional book titled “Purr Prints of the Heart – A Cat’s Tale of Life, Death, and Beyond” in which she described her journey of allowing Mr. Jazz go.
After the publication of her book, Deborah received an overwhelmingly positive response from those who had read it. People reached out to Deborah to share their own experiences with a pet’s death, and Deborah realised that her experience was being mirrored by others and that a pet’s death was a profoundly emotive time for many.
Deborah decided to create Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day in honour of Mr. Jazz and for all the readers whose lives were affected by her book, so that people from all over the world could share their stories and memories of pets they have loved and lost. The holiday was first observed in 2015, and now, every year on August 28, people take time to remember their canines.
