Recreation Day 2023: On the initial Monday of November, northern Tasmania, Australia, observes Recreation Day. That date falls on November 6 this year. For those who observe it, it is a bank holiday; therefore, they are granted the day off and educational institutions remain closed.

Recreation Day 2023: History

Recreation Day is a peculiar bank holiday in that it does not hold a particularly significant historical context. The holiday has no religious or cultural origins; for the majority of its history, it was merely referred to as the “First Monday of November Holiday.”

This changed in 1989, when the Bank Holidays Act was amended to remove all references to the holiday; consequently, the holiday was renamed Recreation Day. The day was originally observed on November 11, but it has since been moved to the first Monday of November.

The holiday is purportedly established to counterbalance the bank holidays that occur throughout the Tasmanian state. In order to ensure that all residents of the state receive an equal number of holidays, Recreation Day counterbalances the day off that those in the south have in observance of the Royal Hobart Regatta.
