This year's Regatta Day will occur, but without the usual vendors and bustling throngs. This is a relief for many, as Regatta Day was cancelled for the first time since 1940 due to COVID-19 last year.
A vacation dependent on the weather. There have been boat competitions since the early 1800s. Regatta Day in Newfoundland is one of the coolest festivals on the Canadian calendar due to these traditions. Regatta Day, also known as Royal St. John’s Regatta, is typically observed on the first Wednesday of August and is closely associated with the British monarchy.
On Regatta Day, the provincial capital of St. John’s is dominated by festivities and rowing IF the weather cooperates. The very next morning, city officials convene to determine whether or not the holiday will begin. Too windy for a rowing competition on the historic Quidi Vidi Lake in the city? No vacations. Sunshine? Take a vacation day. Canada, oh Canada.

Unlike almost every other holiday in Canada (and the world), Regatta Day is dependent on the weather. If the weather is favourable, races will be held and you will have the day off. If the weather forecast is gloomy, you must drag yourself out of bed and report to work. So goes life, correct? The night before, bars in Newfoundland and Labrador invite patrons to play Regatta Roulette. You basically get drunk and beseech to the weather gods that Regatta Day will occur. During the week of the Regatta, numerous stores throughout the city offer ongoing discounts in an effort to attract more consumers.
If you’ve been delaying a large purchase, Regatta Day is a good opportunity to do some comparison shopping. Although rowing competitions on St. John’s Harbour extend back to the 1700s, this is the first documented organised race in the region. The Prince of Wales attends the races. Regatta Day remains one of the competitions that members of the British monarchy always attend. Regatta Day is moved from August to July for the duration of Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth II’s visit. In 1993, in recognition of the close relationship between Canada and the British monarchy, Regatta Day is renamed Royal.
