Remembrance Sunday 2023: It is observed on November 12 this year, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Sunday, which is initially observed on the Sunday closest to Armistice Day or Remembrance Day (November 11), is a national holiday in the United Kingdom that honours the valor of British and Commonwealth servicemen who served in World Wars I and II. We now commemorate the restoration of world peace through the valor and fortitude of these soldiers—an undertaking that will live on in our hearts forever.

Remembrance Sunday 2023: History

1914 marked the outbreak of World War I, which lasted until 1918, when the Germans capitulated. The participating nations subsequently endorsed a peace treaty known as the Armistice on November 11, 1918. This date has since been observed as Remembrance Day. Commencing at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of the year, the celebration is temporally fixed. A two-minute period of silence is observed to pay homage to the departed soldiers who perished in the line of duty. The annual ceremony remained in place until Sunday, 1942, when it was relocated to accommodate security concerns during World War II.

On Sunday, 1945, the year World War II concluded, Armistice Day occurred, rendering any modification to the metric superfluous. When it appeared that continuing the November 11 tradition would diminish the significance of World War II, Bernard Griffin, archbishop of Westminster, proposed that the commemoration of both conflicts be observed on the second Sunday of November. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed by the monarch of England.

Observance of Remembrance Sunday takes place at the Whitehall Cenotaph. Established by Edwin Lutyens, the Cenotaph is an enduring edifice that pays homage to valiant soldiers who perished during World War II.

A two-minute period of silence precedes the national ceremony at 11 a.m., which is then followed by music, prayers, wreath-laying, and procession.

Additionally, the occasion is designated with a poppy lapel adornment. Poppies symbolize the commemorative occasion due to their profusion on numerous battlefields in the aftermath of the conflict. In support of the military, the Royal British Legion started selling red poppy lapel pins.

The Festival of Remembrance was formally observed by the Royal British Legion in 1952, subsequent to their nomenclature change. The festival has since grown to include parades, music, choirs, and group presentations, among other elaborate activities.
