France invaded Niger, starting its colonization effort in the 1890s. Niger became a republic on December 18, 1958, a momentous day even though they attained independence in 1960. Niger had gained independence and self-government on December 4 prior to this. This resulted from the Fifth French Republic’s establishment bringing about constitutional changes.

Hamani Diori also assumed the presidency of the interim administration on December 18. When Niger gained complete independence in 1960, he was subsequently named president. But it wasn’t until 2005 that Republic Day was proclaimed an official holiday. President Mohamed Bazoum and Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou are Niger’s current leaders.
