Revolution Commemoration Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Vietnam

On August 19, 1945, Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh began the August General Uprising, also known as the August Revolution, against French and Japanese colonial rule in Vietnam.

On August 19, Vietnam observes August Revolution Commemoration Day, which commemorates the 1945 revolution led by Ho Chi Minh that ended Japanese dominance in Vietnam. The anniversary of the revolution is not a national holiday, but it is a significant commemorative date. The autumn of 1945 will be remembered as a pivotal turning point in the national formation and military history of Vietnam. In this great revolution, the Vietnamese people threw off the yoke of colonialism and feudalism to regain their power and independence, and founded the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the world’s first state for farmers and workers.

The background of Revolution Commemoration Day

On August 19, 1945, Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh began the August General Uprising, also known as the August Revolution, against French and Japanese colonial rule in Vietnam. Within two weeks, the majority of rural villages and communities in Northern, Central, and Southern Vietnam had fallen under the control of the Viet Minh.

According to Vietnamese archives, on September 2, 1945, the Viet Minh assumed control of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese independence. The objective of the August Revolution was to establish unified Viet Minh authority over the entire nation. The August Revolution of 1945 was the most pivotal event in the modern history of Vietnam. It marked the end of French colonial rule in Vietnam and the beginning of Vietnamese independence. It also marked the end of the Confucianist monarchy and the beginning of a democratic republic with a communist orientation.

Why the communist-dominated Viet Minh front was able to assume power in August 1945 has been the subject of extensive writing. Anti-communist critics have frequently attributed the victory of the Viet Minh to a historical coincidence in which the Viet Minh occurred to be present when the Japanese surrendered to the Allies. The Vietnamese communists, on the other hand, have narcissistically attributed their success to competent organisational and propaganda leadership. In actuality, both the “external material conditions” of Vietnamese society at the time and the Viet Minh’s “subjective” disposition contributed to the success of the August Revolution.

In March 1945, the Japanese occupying forces overthrew the French colonial administration in a swift coup d’état. The widespread political instability that followed the rebellion exacerbated Vietnam’s catastrophic famine.

As a result, the Viet Minh became the sole Vietnamese political force capable of organising the Vietnamese people through their extant “Liberation Committees.” Immediately after the Japanese surrender in August 1945, the Viet Minh seized political authority and have maintained it ever since. Thus, the triumph of the Viet Minh was the result of both historical luck and revolutionary leadership.
